As a commercial photographer much of my work is scripted by designers, art directors and clients, this rather imposes styles and ways of seeing. I discovered many years ago that by offering my way of seeing as a wedding photographer I was able to satisfy my desire to make photographs and made pictures that told the story of a ‘perfect day’ which my wedding clients loved. I often hear the horror stories of wedding photographers almost ruining a wedding by taking hours to set up groups, alienating guests by stopping them from taking their own pictures, by being grumpy and even rude. Weddings are great occasions, times to be enjoyed and I find great pleasure in sharing such an important day, and to do so I try to be inconspicuous or at most part of the occasion. One of the greatest accolades I have received as a wedding photographer came when a couple came to collect their photographs from me and commented, “some of our guests were surprised we didn’t have a photographer”. My photographs reflect the time enjoyed, they show the warmth and humour so often evident when families and friends come together to celebrate. All wedding photographers must expect to photograph groups and this I do however I aim to make this time painless and quick so the celebrations can continue. I do not do many a season, maybe 15 in the whole year because I do not want to be tired by the experience, I want every wedding to be as the first, where I see with a fresh and well tuned eye. I am interested in making great photographs rather than selling albums and mountains of re-prints. I describe what I do as documentary or observational wedding photography, I am telling the story of a wedding with my pictures. My advice to anyone who asks me about wedding photography is to first find a photographer whose work you love, then make sure you can spend some of your wedding day with that person and last make sure the photographer charges within your budget.
